Decentralized composting to mitigate transportation cost for treating municipality solid waste

Treating municipality solid waste (MSW) has both environmental concerns and heavy costs. To this end, valorizing them through aerobic composting has been pursued in most of the countries around the world, and in Iran specifically but mainly through centralized systems. In this paper, the centralized system will be compared with its decentralized counterpart. It will be shown that the latter can outperform the centralized systems in mitigating transportation costs and to some extent, the processing costs. It is also more robust to any probable problems in transportation and can simplify the complex source segregation problem intrinsically. On the flip side, it needs regulations that gradually and adaptively propel the society towards its acceptance. Yet, the supervision and management won't be dismissed. It will also be shown that there has been a growth in number of scientific papers in this field. Moreover, many companies have targeted the problem and there are numerous products in the market. These are to show the trend of world's move, to be noticed by authorities in the country to reach the next horizon of development.
